Austin Thyroid Surgeons attended the AACE meeting in Houston, Texas on August 4, 2018. The take home point was “less is more” when it comes to surgery for thyroid cancers. The vast majority of thyroid cancers are not aggressive, and therefore can be treated with thyroid lobectomy or hemi-thyroidectomy if 4cm or less in size. If we are able to preserve more than half of the thyroid gland, then patients likely will NOT have to take thyroid replacement for life.
